Christmas in Lviv

Christmas is one of the lightest and brightest Christian holidays. This is a special time of families' union and different generations as well during to which souls of people are full of feelings of universal goodness, forgiveness and love.

They say that the most spirit of Christmas you can feel just in Lviv. It is here people keep and pass on ancient traditions of the God Nativity.

Here Christmas is always special and unusual, fun and friendly. It is decorated by «Bethlehem's» stars – that is a symbol of Christmas, (because according to legends, namely the star informed the world about Jesus Christ Nativity) and a genuine carol.

Traditionally Christmas in Lviv celebrates from January 7 to 9 in the center of the city, that is the Market Square with great feast which is called «Doughnut's Holiday». This year there will hold the eighth Doughnut's Holiday in the city. All citizens and guests of Lviv can touch of ancient traditions, watch incredible performances of puppet shows called in Ukraine "vertep" and listen to children songs in the street enjoy other performances, visit the Great Christmas Fair. By the way, the Christmas Fair is recognized is one of the longest and the most colorful fairs in Europe. It lasts from December 19 to January18.

Visiting the fair you can taste boiled rice with raising, honey, nuts and poppy-seeds. Namely, boiled rice with raising and honey is the main dish from the twelve dishes of Christmas Eve Supper and it is a symbol of hearth and prosperity.

Except boiled rice with raising and honey all guests can taste doughnuts, this is one more obligatory dish of Christmas in Lviv. There will be a special «Doughnut's House», where you can eat it to be satisfied and to get know the history of the doughnuts.

«Lviv Christmas Post» will also work here this year. You will be able to send Christmas post cards free of charge just from the Market Square in any part of the world. During this so called «Doughnut's Holiday» you will be able to watch the competition of the best puppet shows, the competition of the best doughnut's eater, the best mistress, the most lovely angel and the worst devil.

Children from art schools as well as famous crafts will decorate components of Christmas story especially for this Christmas. In general will be 20 Nativity scenes. The exhibition will be created from these small works of art which you will be able to visit in the exhibition hall of the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life «Shevchenko Gai».
